“Smallpipes’’ are a quieter, more refined type of bagpipe, designed mainly for indoor playing.
They can be either bellows-blown, where air is supplied by the arm, or mouth-blown, like Highland pipes.
There are two main types: Scottish smallpipes, similar in feel to Highland pipes, and Northumbrian smallpipes, the tone of both is soft and steady, making them ideal for practice, small gatherings, and folk sessions.
We love our smallpipes & have brought our smallpipes along to many of our gigs. Once we have played the Great Highland Pipes, the smallpipes have come out for an informal singsong with the guests and these have proved very popular. The smallpipes are perfect for playing in pubs or playing indoors.. We have had great fun playing with other musicians , as the smallpipes are much quieter and don’t demand to be centre stage in the same way as the big pipes do!
