11/12 April 2025 Apeldoorn Netherlands
The Wintringham Pipers were pleased to join the 48th Highlanders of Holland to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the liberation of Apeldoorn in the Netherlands by Canadian forces in April 1945.
On 11 April we played in a grand parade in Apeldoorn with the 48th Highlanders and some members of the Somme Battlefield Pipe Band, a French band. We also played in a concert at a local church. It was a huge event and it was clear from all the memorabilia on display that the Dutch people suffered terribly under the Nazi regime.
On Sunday 12 April we joined both bands to play at a special service of remembrance, at the Holten Canadian War Cemetery in Apeldoorn. The cemetery is beautifully kept and a very respectful and touching service was given for the Canadian soldiers killed in action. It could be seen from the gravestones that many of the men were only in their teens
